Poem for Christmas Eve: Solstice Moon

"Solstice Moon", pastel with text, poem and illustration © B.E. Kazmarski

A satin silent night,

A silver path through my window,

And silken paws paused to stay

On the pillow next to me.

Aside from class assignments here and there through school, this was my first poem. Its inspiration and subject? I was actually home for Christmas, in my old room, and missed my cat Bootsie, who had earlier that year been moved to live with me at college. Not only was she not there, but there was no cat at all and I’d grown quite accustomed to sharing my space with cats. I had referenced this poem and Bootsie coming to be with me in college in “The Unintended Gift”.

Now when I read it I think of all the cats who slept on that pillow whose silken paws are touched by the moonlight, not with sadness, but with the love and hope with which I originally wrote this poem.

May you remember with fondness on this Christmas Eve all the felines who’ve shared your life, and all the animals and humans who are and have been a part of your life. Merry Christmas!

    • It’s totally from my heart, Chris, not based on any other images, and it’s been there all these years since I wrote the poem.

Merry Christmas to you and the kids! We hope you have two days of peace and joy, followed by even more.

  • A beautiful early muse. Thanks for visiting today. Sending your family (2 legged and 4-legged) peace and purrs for the holidays! Please send purrs to Domino. We just got back from the vet. Maybe UR. Complete diagnosis unclear, waiting on bloodwork.

    • Layla, I didn’t know he wasn’t feeling well! He has five black cats purring for his health, and we know he’s a tough guy. Peace and good wishes to Domino and all the rest of of you.
