Oh Very Young…

Mewsette asks for more.

“Mmmm, that smells good! Can I have some?”

“No, Mewsette, this food is for the senior girls.”

“I’m a girl. Can’t I have some?”

“Indeed you are a girl, but you’re a young girl, not anywhere near being a senior girl.”

“Why does that mean I can’t eat when they do? Why do they get to eat all the time when we can only eat twice a day?”

“They are older and can’t eat as much at one sitting, so I feed them in between.”

“You’ve got to be kidding—I’ve seen Cookie pack it in and lick her dish!”

“I don’t give her as much as I give you.”

“That’s not fair. I want to be old so I can eat all day.”

“Someday, Mousse, you will be old, but it’s going to be a long time before you get there.”

“How long do I have to wait to be old?”

“Well, you’re just past three years old so you’re barely an adult kitty and you’ve got a long way to go.”

“How old is Kelly?”

“She is sixteen.”

“How old is Cookie?”

“She is eighteen.”

“How old was Peaches?”

“She was twenty.”

“Peaches always let me take a few bites of her food.”

“I know. Peaches was a nice kitty.”

“She was. I miss her. She was a nice pillow too.”

“You all took good care of her.”

“So how long till I’m old?”

“Never, if I have anything to say about it.”

“That’s not fair! Why?”

“Because after you get old, then you go away like Peaches did.”

“Oh.”

“I want you around for a long, long time, Mewsette.”

“I might be around longer if you fed me more.”

“Oh, Mewsette! Well, at least I kept you occupied long enough for the girls to finish their lunch.”

  • I just wish I’d had the other lens on this camera–it can’t quite focus as close as Mewsette’s face, so she’s a little out of focus but her back looks good. She’s quite big, and sits very tall, so I’ll have to make sure I have one of the other lenses at hand for closeups like that!

Amazing… I have had similar chats with Mewsette’s older brothers, although it’s really MOLLY who is the food hog here (and she’s one of OUR three senior girls). Angus and Donal don’t realize how fortunate they actually are, though, since EVERYONE here gets fed (at least) three times a day. If they knew their poor mama and younger siblings were wasting away with a meager two meals daily, they might try to lodge a complaint with the authorities. Of course, they get smaller portions (but please don’t mention that to them).

    • Don’t let my household know that more than two meals a day are possible unless you’re really old! Sometimes all five of them get the same idea, then I’m done for. But you can go ahead and tell Angus and Donal that there are starving kitties in other households, and they should be glad for what they get. Let’s hope they never develop the ability to communicate across the miles and generations, or your household and mine will be in trouble. Come to think of it, that might not be a bad story line….

  • Oh, how sweet – it would be hard to say no to that adorable kitty!

  • Love it, Bernadette! Reminded me of how whenever I have a sick/elderly cat on the baby-food-and-boiled-chicken regimen, the others move in like the cute fuzzy predators they are. Last night, Phoenix, our male Aby, dive-bombed me from the top of the refrigerator when I was giving said boiled chicken to Star, our 15-year-old Siamese who’s in the earlystages of kidney failure.
And, Mewsette, Bernadette’s right — all of us cat people feel the same on this point.

    • Sorry, Mewsette, you lose, everyone agrees with me! I’m sure we all give in now and then, and I’m sure we all go through the same steps with each of our elders.

  • Mewsette, you don’t want to be old, believe me. It is hard to understand why some of your sisfurs get food more often. It is the same around here. Keep up pestering your Mom and maybe she will give you a little snack every now and then. Loved talking to you Mewsette. Take care and have a fun day.

    • Marg, I have no problem turning the boys down, but sometimes I give in to Mewsette. Perhaps I really am biased, as the boys claim!
