October Featured Artwork and Desktop Calendar: “Sitting in the Dark”

I sketched this in March while Mewsette sat in the corner of my studio behind the door, but as I scrolled through my sketches and art to decide on this month’s calendar and found this, I knew it was the one.

It’s pretty hard to top last year’s Halloween desktop calendar and even the year before! Last year’s is still one of my favorites and a rather permanent Halloween design here in the studio. “Mewsette With Pumpkins” is a favorite photo, but I really don’t have a whole lot of artwork that indicates Halloween. Initially I was going to avoid the holiday here and go with a painting that reflected October colors because I don’t like to tie black cats with Halloween. But in the end we’ll be seeing a lot of black cats tied to Halloween in not so positive a nature and I can’t pass up a possibility for promoting the beauty and mystery of black cats to kind of counter that effect.

Here’s what I had to say about “Sitting in the Dark” the day I sketched it.

I turned around from my drafting table and there was Mewsette, quietly sitting in the corner behind the door where it had grown quite dark. All I could see of her was a highlight here and there made by my worklight and, of course, her eyes. The furnace was running and she was quietly enjoying the warm air. I knew she’d sit fairly still for long enough to get the basic outlines of her in white charcoal on black paper, and I’d do her eyes just as I saw them. Of course I had to finish from a photo, but I got the basics in place before she started a bath and curled to nap.

I rescanned and adjusted the image to eliminate the distracting pattern made by the construction paper and though you can still see a bit of a pattern it doesn’t interfere with Mewsette and her mysterious self. Enjoy Mewsette’s green eyes, and the coming holiday!

This month’s desktop calendar

I’ve worked this image into a desktop calendar for you to enjoy and use for the entire month. Looking at the downloads from previous months and averaging out which dimensions fit which devices, I have reduced the number of variations from 12 to three. It was very time-consuming to create all the variations with new devices arriving all the time, so I have one for horizontal monitors/screens, one for square monitors/screens, and one that should fit the dimensions of nearly all mobile devices.

If these sizes don’t work for your device, or if you have problems, please let me know. Often I can troubleshoot the reason an image won’t download or won’t load on your device, but if I just can’t figure it out I can just email it to you and hope that works.

How to download and use your desktop calendar

  1. Click on one of the images below that matches the dimensions of your monitor to open the image in a new page.
  2. For desktop computers and laptops, right-click on that image and on a desktop computer choose “save as desktop wallpaper” or “save as background” or whichever option your operating system gives you to be able to do this. You may also simply save it to your hard drive and set it as your background from there.
  3. For mobile devices, download the image to your gallery then choose it as your wallpaper—this is slightly different on all devices.
