This is where it all began, with sketching and then painting my cats. I still remember working on those original pencil and pastel works, even what the weather was, or trying different colors of pastel to match the colors I saw in the cat, or looking at them after I had been busy for a few weeks and, my breath taken away, wondering how I’d created that image. That all began in 1988, nearly 30 years ago, and I’m still learning new things all the time.
As I’ve built my website Portraits of Animals to display and sell my art, I decided I’d have not just a gallery of feline artwork as I do other subjects, but I’d also include a page of “My Cats”, artwork of only my cats, no portraits, no other sketches or illustrations, just my cats, so that I, and you, can look over the inspiration they’ve given me through the years.
You’ll recognize some of this artwork, and in fact my daily sketches are included because 99.9% of them are my cats–being inspired by their everyday activities was part of the premise of the series–and in all styles, from all eras, each takes me back to a moment of inspiration and love.
Not only the art but the story behind the art is included with each painting. I still have work to do to add more of them too! Spend some time over the holidays and look, read and enjoy. Have a great holiday, and love to you and your animal and human family!
You can read more about my career as an animal artist here on The Creative Cat or visit Portraits of Animals, look at My Cats and then browse all the other artwork I’ve created, all beginning with their inspiration.
