Marketplace: Bella! Handprinted and Embellished Tote Bag

Bella! Tote bag.
Bella! Tote bag.

O.M.Geeeee! It’s Bella! On a bag with green button eyes just like her big round eyes! This new idea couldn’t wait any longer, Bella, in silhouette, at the bottom of a bag and with just big blue-green eyes that are two-hole buttons sewn on with black thread.

I had intended to work it out for tote bags first and maybe a few other items and screen print it, but making screens has been a challenge (workspace issues) so I’ve been holding off, but holding the idea. With the Homeless Cat Management Team and Pittsburgh CAT spaghetti dinner I really wanted this item because Bella is an alum of both organizations! Based on one of my sketches of Bella from shortly after she arrived here simply called “Bella”, I pulled out the scan of the little painting and refined the design in Photoshop. Bella’s eyes are not yellow green, they are a cooler blue-green, and I found pretty close to a good color for her.

Thanks, Deana Ann Boggs, for taking this wonderful selfie with your new bag! You’ll be seeing this design on a variety of bags as well as on other items soon, and I also have plans to print it in other colors.

Dishtowels

When I created the Bella! Tote Bag I also had the idea of adding Bella to as many other products as I could, the first being dishtowels. I had some on hand I’d bought for just this purpose so I stenciled her graceful silhouette onto the flour sack cotton. After debating the issue I decided I liked the silhouette alone and that I would leave the buttons off—would you want buttons on your dishtowel?—and just have the silhouette grace the bottom edge.

The only really plain white dishtowels I could find were flour sack dishtowels, but that’s okay because they dry the best. I offer the towel in two different sizes, though both are the same price: 17″ x 38″ and 28″ x 28″. These towels aren’t always exact in size, but they are always the same soft, absorbent 100% cotton. I pre-wash and dry them on the clothesline before I print.

Upcoming Events

If you are local I’d love to see you in the month of June. For now I only have one event planned but I’m looking into a few others.

I’ll have as much of my handmade goods as I can pack and set up, plus greeting cards, garden flags, prints of artwork on paper and canvas and selected originals and framed prints. May was really fun for meeting a lot of pets and adoptable animals and seeing old friends and and meeting new ones. Most of all, I love getting out there with my stuff after spending hours in my studio.
