From the Archives: Lucky Seven, 2010, and a Few More from Cookie

My Lucky Seven cats.
My Lucky Seven cats.

From this day in 2010…

Here they are in a really lucky shot—all seven of my household ON the cabinet! Cookie and Kelly got their special noms as senior girls while I was working in the kitchen, and one by one all the others gathered around. Normally I don’t let all the others up on the cabinet, but they moved in so quickly, but quietly, not trying to steal food or interfere, and then I realized the photo potential.

In front, the two tortie girls with their faces in the bowls are Kelly and Cookie. Behind are Mewsette, Mr. Sunshine, Giuseppe, Jelly Bean and Mimi.

This cabinet is only about 20″ x 30″, but when food is an issue they can crowd anywhere, though I think this might be the absolute capacity for this particular crowd of cats.

Who’ll Stop the Rain? 2011
Cookie's out in the early morning rain.
Cookie’s out in the early morning rain.

On a rainy November afternoon in 2011, Cookie was so unhappy with the cold wet rain that she decided to make fun of my habit of quoting lyrics and titles from pop songs. I’m not sure which of us was acting more absurd: her for wandering around in the rain, mud and wet leaves, or me for following her through it to take photographs and notes on our conversation.

This walking in the rain stuff isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The ground is all wet, the leaves are slippery, and there isn’t a spot of sun to sit in. But have you ever seen the rain comin’ down on a sunny day?

I stepped up on my log and onto the picnic table bench and all the way up on the table, and it’s just wet everywhere. Really, I just can’t stand the rain. Raindrops keep fallin’ on my head, and it’s so dark, it’s just like a rainy night in Georgia. If the rain was purple, or if there was some fire to go with the rain, that might be kind of cool.

Walking in the rain is no fun.
Walking in the rain is no fun.

But this has to clear up, nothing lasts forever, even cold November rain.

All I want is to sit on my picnic table and look at the yard, and I wonder, still I wonder, who’ll stop the rain? Not my mom. And I honestly think she’s putting words in my head because she’s singing in the rain and I just wish she’d stop! Now I’ll have these songs in my head all day!

She always tried to blame these things on me!

Stop it with the songs AND the rain!
Stop it with the songs AND the rain!

Photos pulled “From the Archives” were taken by one or another digital camera of mine between 2002 and, well, yesterday, but usually they are older than that, and I had never had the chance to feature them. Vintage Photos are from my film archives back to 1983 when I purchased my Pentax K-1000 camera. They’re a fun way to “introduce” other members of my feline family who came and went before I began blogging, and to illustrate my feline family in general from days gone by.

Tortoiseshell Camouflage

Tortoishell cats can be camouflaged against many backgrounds with all their irregular speckles and dots. This photo of Cookie taken in the spring of 2010 truly shows her ability to blend into her background as her orange and tan blend with last year’s leaves and her green eyes blend with the spring’s new growth. I could not love her more. Read more and purchase.
