June 1 Begins Hurricane Season, Are You and Your Pets Prepared?

Peaches is ready.

June is the beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season, an ideal time to think about the effects of a hurricane whether we live in the direct path of a hurricane or far away. We’ve already had tornadoes and violent weather this year, not to mention industrial accidents for which evacuations were necessary. Winter holds its own challenges with snow and ice that can disrupt power and trap us in our homes in freezing weather. We can’t be prepared for every conceivable emergency, but we can, and should, have general preparations made for emergencies and evacuations that include our animal companions.

Flash flooding in Carnegie, PA during Hurricane Ivan in 2004; the flood waters rose in a matter of a few hours while people were still at work for the day, and many pets were stranded and lost.

Weather emergencies, transportation and industrial accidents and emergencies involving our own health and welfare all affect our animal companions’ safety, sometimes necessitating the evacuation of an entire household or handing their care over to someone else. As responsible animal caretakers we need to be prepared for as many circumstances as possible.

Emergency Preparedness for You and Your Pets

My article “Emergency Preparedness for You and Your Pets” outlines the types of emergency situations you should consider and how to prepare your pets themselves and prepare for their needs, including a downloadable checklist designed by Karen Sable, owner of Pet Emergency Training, LLC.

Article contents:

  • Emergency Situations to consider
  • Storms
  • Floods
  • Industrial accidents on roads and railways
  • Fires

How and What to Prepare

  • Make arrangements with neighbors
  • Find a pet-friendly place to stay
  • Pack materials you’ll need
  • Download a checklist to gather and organize your emergency materials

Take some time this weekend to prepare for emergencies, and know that if the time comes you need to act, you are ready to help save your pets’ lives.
