Hot off the Worktable: A New Color for “Back to Front” Pendants

Just finished.
Just finished.

“Back to Front in Black With Gold” is one of the things I’m working on for the upcoming cat show as well as for general sale. It’s a black polymer clay medallion with my brush pen illustration “Back to Front” stamped on the front. It’s complete with black jump ring and black flocked cord, hot off the worktable.

The new style pendant.
The new style pendant.

You may recognize this pendant, a clay medallion with my brush pen sketch “Back to Front” stamped on the front. I initially designed this pendant two years ago—hard to believe it was that long ago! When I produced the first design I found it hard to choose from the many ideas I had and decided to start with the white clay and black stamped illustration. Even as I produced that one I was planning on working my way through the other designs in 2016 but instead skipped off to other things entirely. That’s okay, those designs needed to become real too.

I chose polymer clay this time because I wanted them to be black and wanted to see both how it worked with solid black clay and no need to paint each of them, and to see how polymer clay worked out when rolled this thin. I made 10 pendants and six survived, one I accidentally folded as it came out of the oven, three cracked when I drilled the hole for the jump ring. Oh, well, something to keep in mind. The photo above includes all the pendants and most of the materials I used to make them on my well-used worktable.

With the initial run I also made four shapes and had three styles of cord because I liked them all and got positive remarks from everyone I’d showed them to. I let sales of the original narrow down the choices of shape and cord, especially right now when I’m trying to make so many things at one time. I chose the oval because that was the most popular shape, followed closely by the circle, and…I think I want to make the circle too, but not for the cat show, I’ll wait until later this month. I chose just the flocked cord because that was by far the most popular, and I think I’ll stay with that. They will sell for $15.00 including shipping.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“Back to Front” is just how I visualized this “line drawing”—from the point of Bella’s tail that meets her back, out and back and around and over to her shoulder, then over to her face, from back to front. The little feline, I was so concerned I’d muss it up. You can see more sketches on The Creative Cat.

Where to find this pendant

I won’t have time to list this on Portraits of Animals before the cat show, but I will list everything new next week after I’ve unpacked and had the chance to take good photos of everything. You’ll find it with other handmade feline gift items my Handmade Feline Gifts gallery.
