HCMT Feral Cat Day Clinic: 99 Cats Spayed and Neutered

Thank you for rescuing us!

The kittens were too young to be spayed and neutered, but these cuties, along with several others, were rescued from a pretty bad neighborhood as part of the “mass trapping event” preceding the Homeless Cat Management Team’s Feral Cat Day Clinic. These kittens and others are in foster homes being socialized and fattened up for spay or neuter a little later this year, and eventual adoption.

99 stray and feral cats spayed and neutered—do the math!

“I didn’t want to be a street cat anyway!”

However, 99 cats were spayed or neutered at the clinic on Sunday, October 6, all stray or feral, trapped from streets, abandoned buildings, back yards and farms all around Pittsburgh by a dedicated group of volunteers, some of whom individually brought in over a dozen cats and kittens. These people started weeks before, strategizing who would be trapping cats and where, then beginning on the previous Thursday and Friday and all day Saturday until early into the morning Sunday trapping every cat they could, transporting them to the clinic, often volunteering at the clinic along with volunteer veterinarians and veterinary technicians, then transporting the cats back and holding them for a day or two until they are ready for release.

And you know what? They’re going to do it all over again in a few weeks. They volunteered their time and effort because they know this is the best way to help cats who’ve been abandoned and live on the streets, and it helps not only these abandoned cats but all cats.

Lila and Mia

Lila is sleek and petite and a little bit shy.

Lila and Mia, two sleek house panthers are being fostered at Cat Around Town, a cats-only grooming shop in Dravosburg south of Pittsburgh! They are true beauties and very affectionate. They are about two years old and spayed, but when their human lost her home and they needed a place to stay veterinary records didn’t come along with them so their vaccinations will need to be updated.

Mia likes dogs! She greets a visitor to the shop.

Lila, above, is a limitless shy kitty but so sweet, loves head rubs and literally reaches out to ask for attention.

Mia, right, is a sweet girl, outgoing and friendly. She likes dogs and has also lived with cats but she is an alpha female when it comes to cats and can be a bit of a bully.

Though they lived together, Mia is a little bit of a bully to Lila, and they’d be just as happy, and just as beautiful, apart from each other.

If you are interested in adopting or would like to find out more information about these two girls, visit the Cat Around Town website or find them on Facebook.

C.R.I.C.A.A.T., or Call and Report Inhumane Cruelty and Abuse of Animals Today, is a non-profit organization based in Washington County, south of Pittsburgh. Founders Cathy Cunningham and Susanne Lewis are volunteer, unpaid Humane Police Officers who regularly investigate, rescue and foster a variety of animals, including many cats. Last year Cathy rescued Lenore and Silverbelle. They always have several cats in foster homes and follow a few in animal control as well, and also trap stray and feral cats for spay/neuter and release. All costs are paid for by donations or out of pocket.

Can’t adopt? Foster! Can’t foster? Donate or volunteer.

There are so many ways you can help cats who need homes and care. You may not have room to adopt another cat, but can foster a cat or kitten for a few weeks. If not that, you can volunteer at a shelter or with a rescue, or donate. You do this because you love your cat, and by doing so you help all cats. No matter which of these actions you take, you help to save a life, and make life better for all cats.

  • Adopt one of the cats I’ve posted here, or from any shelter or rescue near you, or from Petfinder, to open up a space for another cat to be rescued and fostered.
  • Offer to foster cats or kittens for a shelter or rescue near you.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or rescue.
  • Find a group of volunteers who work with homeless cats and help them with their efforts.
  • Donate to a shelter or rescue near you.

If you can foster kittens or adults cats to help prepare them for a forever home, please run to your nearest shelter and find a cat who needs you! Anyone can help with this effort at any level, even if all you do is donate to a shelter or rescue so they can help to pay for the food or medications needed for their foster, or the spay/neuter/veterinary care during a clinic.

. . . . . . .

And a big thanks to the people who have gone out of their way to rescue an unneutered polydactyl tom who had an huge abscess in his cheek, a really old orange cat who was filthy with his own waste and dirt and food, who transported a friendly adult female on death row whose only transgression was a URI, and who rescued all the momcats and kittens and bottle fed all the orphaned kittens and who feed all the cats outdoors who they can’t take in. The stories fly by every single day and I can’t keep up with them, but I’m so glad people take the time for this.
