About 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, Punxsutawney is just about what you saw in the movie—a small town surrounded by forests and farmland. There aren’t too many options for animal rescue in town, it’s prime area for stray cats and dogs to show up needing care, and low-cost spay and neuter to help strays and owned pets isn’t easily available. Lynn Porada, one of the founding members of Just Us for the Animals, started rescuing cats and dogs and providing TNR services through occasional clinics, then found the Homeless Cat Management Team and began driving all the way from Punxsy with a truckload of cats to nearly every clinic. Then, working with Frankie’s Friends, she helped to schedule the mobile clinic to visit for clinic days.

Robin McIlvane is another co-founder of Just Us for the Animals. She is an artist and owner of RM Sign And Design in Punxsutawney and created the illustration on the mug and ornament, and had them printed at Crooked Creek Creations of Indiana, and has done many other creative projects to benefit animals in the area.

Lynn says,

We have been helping animals together for greater than 5 years…however the last few years it has intensified because the number of our resources outside of Punxsy is growing thanks to my connection with HCMT and Frankie’s Friends and Humane Pa…one night after many animals that needed help and we were the only ones to step up and help I got a call about a dog that needed out of the situation and Robin said to me…isn’t there anyone else we can get to help us foster…my reply..now come on Robin..you know it is just us for the animals…and that pretty much was the truth…so it became our motto….LOL..seriously..our mission is to reduce the overpopulation first and foremost but there is always the animal in urgent need that we get called about and then it turns into rescue foster fix and then find home…I am very honored to have the help from Robin and Stephanie( another avid rescuer that I became friends with through our jobs…she is a pharmacist and I being a nurse..she is a huge part of our world…She and Robin are my angels with helping the animals…together I would say we are the dynamic trio from the Punxsy/New Bethlehem area and everywhere in between and around…

About Just Us for the Animals

The mission is to “Promote spay and neuter to reduce pet overpopulation. Educate on TNR (trap, neuter and release) of feral cats. Rescue of local animals in need.”

WE ARE NOT A RESCUE NOR A SHELTER!!!!
Our spay/neuter mission is to reduce the overpopulation of animals especially in our area by promoting spay and neuter along with education of TNR(trap, neuter and release) of the feral cats through low cost programs. Our rescue mission is to be the bridge for the unwanted animal between being homeless to getting adopted through a rescue or shelter. Our efforts include getting the animal complete vet care including spay/neuter, dewormed, and vaccinated to transporting the animal to the rescue or shelter where the animal will await adoption into a furever home. Most of the time the funding comes from our own pockets however donations are greatly appreciated to help with any and all of our efforts. We came up with the name of this page because most times when the rescues and shelters are full it comes down to being just us for the animals in our area!!

Can’t adopt? Foster! Can’t foster? Donate or volunteer.

There are so many ways you can help cats who need homes and care. You may not have room to adopt another cat, but can foster a cat or kitten for a few weeks. If not that, you can volunteer at a shelter or with a rescue, or donate. You do this because you love your cat, and by doing so you help all cats. No matter which of these actions you take, you help to save a life, and make life better for all cats.

  • Adopt one of the cats I’ve posted here, or from any shelter or rescue near you, or from Petfinder, to open up a space for another cat to be rescued and fostered.
  • Offer to foster cats or kittens for a shelter or rescue near you.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or rescue.
  • Find a group of volunteers who work with homeless cats and help them with their efforts.
  • Donate to a shelter or rescue near you.

If you can foster kittens or adults cats to help prepare them for a forever home, please run to your nearest shelter and find a cat who needs you! Anyone can help with this effort at any level, even if all you do is donate to a shelter or rescue so they can help to pay for the food or medications needed for their foster, or the spay/neuter/veterinary care during a clinic.
