Giuseppe and His Goldfinch Buddy: 2011

Giuseppe with his buddy the goldfinch.

I haven’t been able to get a photo yet this year, and I’m still not sure if it’s the same little guy, but the goldfinch is back!

I’m not sure exactly when this began or if it’s the same goldfinch, but this will be the third year a goldfinch has come to the window and engaged Giuseppe in a conversation. Likely, though, it is the same goldfinch—they are returning and this is the first time I’ve seen this visit this year.

You can see the goldfinch on the outside looking right at Giuseppe, and I might think he was reacting to a reflection in the window, but when I open the window during the summer, the goldfinch comes to the screen.

Giuseppe doesn’t jump at him, just paws the screen or window, but never acts like a predator. With other birds that come to the window and visit the feeder, he certainly does!

The goldfinch doesn’t say a word, just looks inside.

None of the other cats react to the goldfinch or even seem to notice it when it comes to the window. Often, once Giuseppe has noticed it, another will come by and chase it off.

I’m sure they know each other, these two, Giuseppe and the goldfinch. Maybe they’re just exchanging guy talk. Perhaps someday I’ll figure out how that is.

  • LOL Is that the paw of doom or friendship? Must say your goldfinches look a bit different to ours!

    • Carolyn, I’m not sure what he’d do if the screen wasn’t there! And these are American Goldfinches, so I would guess you have a breed specific to the island–I’ll have to look them up.

Inter-species awareness has always fascinated me. I remember thiking about it, especially, once when re-visiting a friend’s house n being greeted like a long-lost friend.. by his 7 week old kitten. It seemed incredible that the little tiny scrap not only recognised me, but regarded me as a pal. He stood at ~6 inches n me at ~5.7 feet.
The equivalent in human terms would be me be-friending a giant that was as tall as a ~9/10 storey building. Phenomenal, really.
Good Luck to Guiseppe n his goldfinch.. just in case, though, I hope they never actually meet. xxx

    • Annie I hope the screen stays intact as well! Funny how a kitten greeted you that way–perhaps he knew you from “somewhere else”.

A lovely thought, but I’m afraid I didn’t make myself clear. I had visited the friend n his new kitten once before.. but, even if he’s lived in my house, for such a tiny infant being of another species to aknowledge me as both cogent n friendly, on that day just seemed.. awe-inspiring. You have much more experience recently than me with kittens, you’ll know what I mean.

  • I’d like to think it is a former kitty friend of Giuseppe’s reincarnated and coming by to say hello.
    Those photos are so sweet.

    • Julie, that’s what I thought too, but Giuseppe and his siblings and mom have been with me since the kids were three days old. Perhaps it’s his guru.
