“Sparkling Gems”, above, was one of the pieces included in my recent poetry reading and art exhibit, “Walking Around”, featuring poetry, paintings and photos inspired by “walking around” the little town of Carnegie with my camera, sketchbook and tablet. I took the reference photo of mallards splashing around on Chartiers Creek on a bright sunny January afternoon and created the painting in January 2017 during the painting challenge. At least once each year I share my wildlife artwork and the “other” part of my creative passion, nature and wildlife, here on The Creative Cat. I keep these two categories kind of separate so that I don’t completely overwhelm everyone with how much I have to share, but I know that virtually all of my readers have some love of wild birds, little critters, the larger animals of our woods and fields or exotic species like big cats, elephants and rhinos and other species from Africa and Asia.

I focus mainly on the species I see around my in places from my back yard to the woods and waterways I visit. These white-tailed does think they are completely safe and hidden in my back yard. they are completely “Safe” there, but they don’t realize that six houses back the area and we all watch them. I painted this from my reference photos in August 2015. Click the image to read more.

They aren’t all big paintings—some are little sketches. I sketched this from an idea, out in my back yard, during a photo shoot for an article in a self-employed magazine which discussed our methods for preparing a savings and retirement while self-employed. I cleverly drew “my nest eggs”. Click the image to read more.

And I also have linoleum block prints in my wildlife collection as well. This lady leopard turned around to look at us at the Pittsburgh Zoo, and I immediately saw the patterns of her spots and markings turn into a block print. I cut this block about 20 years ago and have since printed it not only on paper but also on tees and sweats, totes and placemats

And as mentioned above, I have merchandise made from a few of these images as well.

Yes? small tote bag.

I have made placemats of just about every one of my wildlife images, and also have a set of seasonal greeting cards featuring my sketches of backyard birds.

People will ask which of my original works are available and the best I can tell them is to come over to my house to look at my walls—and dig through portfolios and boxes and all the little cubby holes where I have artwork stored. Sometimes I go looking and find paintings I forgot I still had.

This includes feline artwork as well as landscapes and still lifes and wildlife paintings and sketches. And if you can imagine that in the three years I did daily cat sketches I completed a little over 1,000 sketches…I have a lot of originals here.

But for people who ask it’s been impossible for me to point them to one place where they can find these works. For that reason I decided one of the galleries on Portraits of Animals is one for just original artwork. And so I went back through all the images I’ve posted on the website and tagged each of my available originals to show up in my new Available Original Art Gallery. Here you’ll find works of every subject in pastel, watercolor, acrylic, pencil, ink, oil pastel, cut paper, mixed media, all the inspirations that caused me to create an image.

So if you’re beginning your holiday shopping, pet your kitties and enjoy some time in nature instead of heading for the mall—you can shop for special gifts of artwork in the galleries on Portraits of Animals. About half of what you’ll find in my Wildlife Artwork Gallery is still available as an original.

Purchasing originals

Why spend extra money on an original when a print looks nice enough? Looking at the original work that was done by hand is very different from looking at a print. I’m careful with preparing my images for prints and they are faithful reproductions, but the original always has more depth and dimension, even though it’s a two-dimensional work. You get a piece of my inspiration when you get an original painting, one of the moments I stood on the landing and sketched Giuseppe and Jelly Bean on the bed, or when I watched the snow on the trail and tried to capture the feeling of a quiet, heavy snowfall.

Original art is a very special gift to give as well, and maybe someday they’ll even be considered an investment.

Each week on Wednesday I feature a piece of artwork, sometimes a current or historic portrait, sometimes an illustration or an art project from years ago, usually cat-themed, but sometimes wildlife or even non-animal subjects, and even projects from my commercial art life.
