Dreams Multiply

"Dreams Multiply"
“Dreams Multiply”

It’s so exciting to share plans, hopes and dreams with others. Sometimes it gives your dreams credibility, and sometimes it actually helps to move them from dreams to reality when others are in on your plans.

I do a lot of planning for my work here, from customer’s projects to new artwork and goals for myself and my business. When I began visualizing my business over 20 years ago it was largely on my own time after work and I didn’t have much time or opportunity for sharing. As soon as I left my day job and started planning my first solo art exhibit that time I had spent away from my home studio was available to me and I could spend it learning about formulating an exhibit, meeting other artists and talking about other future exhibits and events I never would have known about if I hadn’t shared my goal.

And when I used to plan my upcoming paintings, the uncommissioned ones I do for myself, I rarely even mentioned the work until it was done and I began to show it around, but I now find joy in describing a painting I plan to do and hearing from friends who want to know how it’s going and stop in to see it in progress. I feel entirely different about my work when this happens, and I look forward to upcoming exhibits even more knowing how friends feel about the work I’ll be showing.

And of course, observing my felines and how they cuddle and sleep nose to nose I can’t help but be inspired by the way they share their dreams!

So, as I’m organizing my studio and home, moving through planning new art and exhibits and events, things I had always done on my own, I’m filled with even more anticipation than usual because my dreams are multiplying each time I mention a plan to a friend. I hope you find the same thing too, when you share your dreams.

About this artwork

watercolor of three cats
“Dreams of Three”, watercolor, 9″ x 6″ © Bernadette E. Kazmarski

Giuseppe, Mewsette and Mr. Sunshine were all very dreaming very deeply on my desk, curled and tucked neatly together. I saw swirls, and began to visualize how I would interpret those swirls. No heavy lines, I wanted the darkness of their faces, where the swirls began, fading in swirls and marbles and fading lines to the lightness of their shapes. Somehow, speckles would be a part of it. I took a photo, below, and pondered my assignment.

I almost went with sepia and black, but that was too heavy for the dreaming feeling I was visualizing, which I’d done before in “Leaves and Shadows” and decided to work in the same palette. I  began with three freehand swirls with solid faces and ending in just an arc in light blue, then worked medium green in for shape and texture to form the tails of the swirls, then purple to define their faces.

In the end they are all dreaming together, as they do.

P.S. I just noticed, looking at this painting this morning, it’s also kind of heart-shaped!
