Don’t Look Up

two black cats on shelf
Don't look up, the ceiling cats are waiting.

Have the basement cats become confused? Do they think they are ceiling cats?

Mewsette and Jelly Bean are on the shelf above the landing that at one time held houseplants, but the time I found Mewsette stretched out up there with a big spider plant teetering at the edge, I hurriedly got my step stool, grabbed the plant and took the others down. I have always been concerned about more terrestrial dangers to them, and after living in a household of cats who gracefully grew very old I had forgotten about cats who explored up, and up, and up!

Neither Giuseppe nor Mr. Sunshine ever attempt this leap. That’s okay. I know all four could carefully fit on the shelf, and it was meant to hold some fairly heavy plants in clay pots with soil, but I’d rather not risk it—it’s eight feet above ground!

Their older brothers, Angus and Donal, say it must be in their genes. Of course, they were snickering at “only” eight feet (but your ceilings are lower than ours…).

    • No fair, the boys have an attic too! I actually think my ceilings are a little higher, but it’s an interesting leap. Do you remember the idea Danny had about building cat shelves all around the room up near the ceiling? Well, that’s called “catification” and it’s all the rage now. Perhaps we could go into business building them!

  • Great photo, and a perfect illustration of how to catify your home. Who needs decorative plants when you have cats!

    • Ingrid, I’ll take the cats any day! You ought to see when all four run up from the basement, around through the kitchen, office, up the steps and leap to their places–Mr. Sunshine to the windowsill, Giuseppe to the wardrobe and Mewsette and Bean to the shelf. That’s when they really sound like “The Four Housecats of the Apocalypse”! This house is small but at least they have that.

  • It’s amazing how high they can leap. I have a window that’s at least five feet off the floor, and three of the four can make it. Zelda is a floor dweller – she only jumps as high as my bed. 😉
