December Featured Artwork and Desktop Calendar: Stained Glass Cats

My December desktop calendars focus on winter and the winter holidays, and I vary from that beautiful stark winter light to really rich colorful images. Most of my artwork is not themed in any way, so finding a piece that fills those ideas can seem a challenge but once I go and look I am always surprised at what I find. Even though this was painted in May, I realized I’ve been waiting for a chance to use this unique painting.

Here’s an idea that’s been occurring to me lately as I watch the cats in the sun by the dining room window. I love the way the glass in a stained glass panel is shaded light toward the center of its shape, darker outside by the shadow from the lead between the shapes, and even the rippled quality of the color in many pieces of glass. I’d considered oil pastel for this but they weren’t handy when Jelly Bean, Mewsette and Giuseppe gathered in the late afternoon sun in the dining room window. The geranium leaves were aglow, shadows were deep and colorful, and each cat is its unique color. I followed the simplified shapes and colors I saw through squinted eyes.

I’ll definitely work on refining this, at least as long as the sun shines in the window like this. Below is the uncropped version of the sketch.

I’m actually pretty excited that I’ll soon be doing a portrait of several cats in this style! Starting it very soon!

And in just a few days I’ll also have gift items featuring this image. Just wait and see!

This month’s desktop calendar

I’ve worked this image into a desktop calendar for you to enjoy and use for the entire month. Looking at the downloads from previous months and averaging out which dimensions fit which devices, I have reduced the number of variations from 12 to three. It was very time-consuming to create all the variations with new devices arriving all the time, so I have one for horizontal monitors/screens, one for square monitors/screens, and one that should fit the dimensions of nearly all mobile devices.

If these sizes don’t work for your device, or if you have problems, please let me know. Often I can troubleshoot the reason an image won’t download or won’t load on your device, but if I just can’t figure it out I can just email it to you and hope that works.

How to download and use your desktop calendar

  1. Click on one of the images below that matches the dimensions of your monitor to open the image in a new page.
  2. For desktop computers and laptops, right-click on that image and on a desktop computer choose “save as desktop wallpaper” or “save as background” or whichever option your operating system gives you to be able to do this. You may also simply save it to your hard drive and set it as your background from there.
  3. For mobile devices, download the image to your gallery then choose it as your wallpaper—this is slightly different on all devices.
