December Desktop Calendar: Sophie Gets a Look at Herself

I have one holiday cat painting, and this is it, but it’s a natural for this month’s desktop calendar. The original piece of artwork is only 6″ x 8″, and I didn’t quite fill the entire sheet, so having this on a computer screen makes it quite a bit larger than the original and it’s a little funny to see this way.

I also have this available as a holiday card in my Etsy shop as seen at left individually or by the dozen, click here to see this design and others.

Sophie was a little goofy, and did at one time look at herself in a glass ornament on the tree…for my holiday card in 1999 I decided to illustrate that memory in a quick little sketch. Whether or not Sophie thinks she is all nose with tiny eyes and ears or that every ornament has her image on it, I don’t know, but she certainly looked a little disconcerted at encountering her reflection in this way. In any case, she provided the inspiration for a bright, cheerful piece of holiday artwork!

This sketch is also featured on the December 2012 Catnip Chronicles where I provide the “monthly cat”.

Below is a list of wallpaper sizes to fit most desktop, laptop and mobile devices.

For these wallpapers I usually like to fill the screen with artwork, cropping it where necessary, and place the calendar somewhere on the art. But I often like to show the rough edges of a piece of artwork, showing the “unfinished” part of the artwork and letting viewers in on part of the creative process, and this one had a distinctive border I’d already drawn in so I used it as it was, but with a dark green background so it wasn’t screaming from your screen.

I’ll be happy to remember Sophie all through the month of December, and I hope you will too.

And reading statistics and knowing that more than half of my readers view this site on a mobile device, I also did a little more research and found the best dimensions for desktop images for mobile devices.

  1. Click on one of the links below that matches the dimensions of your monitor to open the image in a new page.
  2. Right-click on that image and on a desktop computer choose “save as desktop wallpaper” or “save as background” or whichever option your operating system gives you to be able to do this. I’m not entirely sure how this is done on a mobile device, but I’ll bet it’s not too different.

Desktop and laptop computers

2560×1440 (16:9 for large monitors)
1920×1200 (16:10 and HD monitors)
1920×1080 (16:9 monitors)

Mobile Devices

240×320 (smartphones, texting phones)

  • Thanks again for the desktop calendar. It make me so happy to have your kitties with me when I travel, and I love being able to show off your work to people who may not be familiar with it. Happy Holidays to you and the kids!
