Daily Sketch: Two Cats Sitting, Facing Opposite Directions
Mimi and Giuseppe settled on the cabinet in the kitchen, each intent on things outside, in opposite directions of one another. Mimi is looking out the dining room window and Giuseppe out the back door, probably watching birds, or maybe squirrels.
I studied their profiles and their lines of energy, the most minimal details that would describe how they sat, and suddenly decided to sketch them. Their tails were not curled as such against their sides, but their energy was, and they do often curl their tails like that—it’s a habit of the entire family. I considered making the shapes touch as they were back to back, or even overlapping with the curved areas interlocking and sketched this, but the shapes were confusing then; for some reason I still think it should work and I’ve gone back and looked at it and I am still certain the two shapes need to be slightly separate for the shapes to be clear. And they are!

Drinking My Watercolor Water, 2013
Mewsette insisted on drinking from my rise water for my watercolor brushes. I use large and small jars from pickles and olives and such and they are apparently just the right height for sipping. I am of the observation, though, that cats will drink any water they find—one good reason to be careful anywhere around your house. I have an article on this subject, “Living Green With Pets: Art Cats”.

Giuseppe and Jelly Bean are happily sleeping in the big basket in my studio. Interesting habit of Mr. Sunshine’s is the paw always on the edge of whatever container he’s in. And when two of them are together they often sleep in tandem, hard to distinguish without a little extra detail in a sketch.

Thanks, Sued51–sometimes you can tell I’m working on complicated and detailed work when I do really simple minimalistic sketches.
Simple but effective, Bernadette!
