Daily Sketch: Toy Nearby

Giuseppe finished playing and decided to nap on the floor, but not letting the toy get too far away. That catnip pyramid isn’t going to get away with anything as long as Giuseppe is on guard. Giuseppe?

Incidentally, he is sleeping in the same spot on the floor as he is in the sketch below from last year. Hmm.

What else was I sketching on this date?

I work hard every day so they can do this.

From the bottom up, Giuseppe, Mr. Sunshine and Jelly Bean relax after a hard few minutes of play. I totally enjoy their random shapes and the fact they are not sleeping, only resting—that’s when I catch the little squiggles and swirls of energy in my ink lines. I really like adding the floor, which looks so much like home, and makes it something I see, and have seen, every day for years.

I kind of want to color it in too. Maybe I’ll make a few prints and color those.

I like to try to sketch action shots sometimes, though I end up finishing them from my imagination or from a photo I shot of the scene. With this, I drew Mimi’s outline first and finished her later from a photo, then drew Giuseppe behind, though he had changed position, especially his ears, quite a bit from start to finish. For all the simple postures here, it was frighteningly difficult to capture quickly.

In all, I wonder what each is thinking? About the mousie? About what I’m doing? Mimi wanted me to come upstairs to the studio so she could sit on my lap, and she twirled around at the top of the stairs for quite a while. Giuseppe, I think, was waiting for something to happen so he could do that, whatever it was.

Mewsette Stretching, 2012

Don’t worry, she’s just stretching!

Poor Mewsette; I got a start on this but since the walking stretch is a fleeting thing we had to “pretend” she was doing this a few extra times for me to get the placements of paws and such.

Sketched in red watercolor pencil for Mewsette, shadowed and highlighted in purple and green. I bought a new set of watercolor pencils, will have to keep experimenting. These don’t seem to be as soluble as the set I was using, though it was missing many colors.
