A sketch from observing my cats in the kitchen. I’m not exactly sure why I visualized them in these colors, but what I was studying was their strong shapes as silhouettes with minor highlights within, and the subtle differences in each of their shades of black as represented in red, blue and green. I had thought I had a burgundy marker about the value of the blue and green, so that color looks lighter than the others, but still works. The navy blue is Mr. Sunshine, not in his typical warm color or yellow this time, but his shade of black is dense because is fur is a little longer and has more texture, but he’s a bluish black. The green kitty is Giuseppe, Giuseppe is green, and the burgundy kitty is Mewsette because she is red.
It’s funny that this sketch is so tiny and seeing it on a computer screen it’s nearly twice as big, but it still works.
. . . . . . .
What was I sketching a year ago today?
Lady in Red, 2012
Mimi does a sideways bend to wash her hip—yes, it was as confusing as it looked! I laid down the red shape first in watercolor, quickly dried it with my blow dryer, then came back and sketched Mimi, who was still involved in her bath.
