Daily Sketch: Three Cats Looking
This is what I saw, three cats from behind. I don’t think they are really looking at anything, in fact I think they are having a quiet feline discussion; dinner is imminent. I was sure they’d move by the time I got my materials ready, but the only thing that moved was ears and a turn of the head. They are connected because, well, they are connected.
I also did this sketch of them, below, first. I love to do these brush pen sketches in one continuous line, but when I stood back and looked at this it looked more like they were sitting, and I wanted that cat-crouch observation that I always see with them when they watch me do something.
Sometimes I like to include a photo of the scene if I took one, and below is the photo I took before I began to work, certain they’d lose the pose if they noticed me looking at them especially if they thought it would get dinner faster. Their posteriors are rather exaggerated at this angle.
It’s Giuseppe, Mewette and Bean.
. . . . . . .
What else was I sketching on this date?
Giuseppe and Mimi, 2013
Today, no one would hold still long enough for me to even begin to sketch, but I’d been feeling the pencil all day so I was reduced to following them around the kitchen with my sketch pad while Jelly Bean swatted the pencil out of my hand every chance he got. I did get this nice little sketch of Giuseppe crouching on the floor while Mimi walked back and forth past him.
(And then the platen in my scanner had charcoal and pastel on it; wonder who did that? But I know who got the cat hairs in it.)
. . . . . . .
Squiggly Bean, 2012
Lots of squiggles as Jelly Bean happily bathes after a meal. The extra squiggles add shape and dimension to Bean, describing shadowed areas and motion at the same time as well as just adding interest.
Yes, it’s all one line, no, it wasn’t drawn all at once. This is sketched in felt-tip ink technical pen and it’s nice enough, but the pen tip kept drying out with the constant contact with the paper so I noted the ending spot, capped the pen for a minute or two, then got back to it.

Yup, they knew you were there and that you would give them dinner.
They did not turn as they “knew” you had that flashy box 😉
Kitties are smart !
