When cats find a basket, they find inner peace. In fact, a cat in a basket IS inner peace.

Giuseppe and Mr. Sunshine are curled together like Yin and Yang, sharing and commingling and multiplying their inner peace. In fact, they were probably practicing zazen and were discovering universal insights into the nature of existence, even as Mewsette did earlier as she explored the inner ambiance of the very same basket.

I had other ideas glimmering in my periphery concerning what how I’d like to express my inner sense of what I saw. But I only had a few minutes and they might quit meditating and go off about other business by the time I made up my mind and got materials together so I focused on simple lines and shapes on paper and sketched them in charcoal. Later I saw that today was the birthday of French Post-Impressionist artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, an artist whose work I’ve studied since college both as a painter and as an illustrator and graphic designer, and the little glimmering visual in my periphery came to life in color and line. But I still have work to be done tonight. If the image stays with me, I will sketch it up for tomorrow.

. . . . . . .

What was I sketching a year ago today?

There is so much energy in a cat’s bath, and graceful shapes and movements, it’s one of those things I describe trying to sketch as when we used to play jump rope and you’d watch the rope go round and round, trying to figure the best time to leap in. So I hold the brush pen above the paper and follow Bean’s movements with my hands and eyes and finally start with an ear, but before I’m half done he’s in another posture entirely. Such fun!
