Daily Sketch: The Conversation

The conversation with between Mewsette and me, and it was about a certain incident with art papers that had just happened. I have a project all over my work table and more things on my drafting table, and a certain kitty decided to nimbly leap over my arm held out to prevent a feline from jumping into that particular area. She only wanted to be near me. Everything came out okay.

Mewsette is contrite, and she appears blue because she is immediately underneath one of my daylight balanced work lights and her highlights look bluish, her shadows are very deep. Her eyes are very pale in all that thick, plushy black fur. I can’t be angry.

What other sketches have I shared on or around this date?

Jelly Bean was such an interesting subject, very solid crouching on the stool, waiting to get on my lap, the light shining directly down on him with deep shadows underneath. Then Mr. Sunshine came in the room and he looked down and made an even more interesting subject. He’s nowhere near falling off, but he looks like it just because the angle I used—he is literally one step from my knee. But he decided to give up his pursuit of my knee in favor of a spot on the floor next to his mama. Just that brief encounter made for an interesting partly-finished sketch.

Nap x 4, or Easy Like Sunday, 2013

This is about what it looked like on my bed all day today. Really, I was waiting for one of them to do something interesting, but it was not to be, just several different arrangements of what looked like medium-sized black rocks, and unless I get right up to them it’s difficult to tell what is what, and even up close it can be very confusing. They do have these communal nap marathons on any given afternoon so I did this little sketch on the chance that today would be such a day. Mimi was in the kitchen with me for a while, but when I got out the sketchpad she decided to nap in the cat tree. Too bad, I really wanted something challenging, and didn’t have an opportunity to hop outside and sketch the landscape.

And just a note on why my sketches are often posted quite late: I scan my sketches, which is much more accurate than photographing for most of them because I don’t have my lights permanently set up which evenly illuminate my artwork. However, when I’m working on other projects in my studio the scanner isn’t easily accessible, one of the difficulties of dealing with a small space and a lot of activities.
