Daily Sketch: Speckled Morning
Mimi and Mewsette quietly look out on the morning, the sunlight bright, the leaves thinning, geraniums still in bloom. We won’t have too many more of these with the door open, I think.
This did not turn out as I envisioned, but it turned out as it turned out, and it’s growing on me. The paper is an inexpensive (cheap) sketchpad intended for acrylic paint (because I used up the small watercolor pad) and didn’t take to the watercolor as I’d expected, the blue is a little too vivid and I couldn’t tone it down. But I love the randomness of speckling because it gives a painting an energy that’s otherwise missing, and one that I think expressed a sun-dappled morning beautifully. I applied the speckles with various sized paintbrushes filled with various opacities of paint, especially the green, to give the outdoor area some dimension, tapping the paintbrush handle against my hand over the paper at various distances and angles.
