Cats are usually simply happy wherever they are because if they aren’t, they leave and find a place where they can be simply happy.

Looking at Mr. Sunshine’s graceful curve and watching the fluid motion of his bath I decided only watercolor would do. He and Jelly Bean were so cozy on the table by the window I knew they’d be there for a while and I could at least get a start, which I did, blocking them in as best I could. Even though Mr. Sunshine finished his bath and totally changed position I still finished the painting in one session. Bean was happily sleeping, sketching him is usually pretty easy.

What else was I sketching on this day?

Apparently, we have a mouse under the sink. Giuseppe ceremoniously went to the cabinet doors, opened the left door while the right swung open just a bit, and settled down for a good watch. Sunshine was lured by curiosity, and likely also by the idea of a good game of mouse.

This program will aired for an indefinite amount of time and will pre-empt all other scheduled programs, including dishwashing.

I’m really going to have to get serious about some new markers, though…I think I’ve worn these out!

And that old kitchen sink unit, and wherever in the basement the mousies are coming in. My fine felines aren’t telling.

Detailed Facewash, 2013

Mr. Sunshine enjoys his after-dinner bath in a warm spot in the bathroom, diligently washing his nose.

Usually I sketch Mr. Sunshine in shades of yellow and orange to coordinate with my intuitive color for him, and his name. He’s in green because I began observing Giuseppe for a sketch, but Giuseppe was not in the mood to model tonight and kept moving away. I respect that. Mr. Sunshine is not so sensitive as my opera star.

I attempted to sketch Mr. Sunshine earlier today but he quit what he was doing before I got my materials together. What was he doing? Washing his face! Coincidence? Well, they wash their faces all the time. Funny thing is, when I check the sketches I’ve done on this date in prior years I often find one similar to the one I’ve done or planned to do in activity or medium or both. I was about to sketch Mr. Sunshine with the brush pen, not colored pencil, but he was sitting in the same position, facing the same direction and just his tail was curled a little more than this. I have too many things going in too many rooms today, and for the most part the cats are all settled in little heaps in warm corners.

This is drawn in gel pen, Mr. Sunshine in burgundy and guess who in green. If you guessed Giuseppe Verdi, you are correct.

Mr. Sunshine happened to see the tie to the apron I wear in my studio peeking out from under the door where it hangs on the doorknob. As we always say about fancy toys and cats, the floor is littered with toys and they play with something of mine. Sunshine was totally overwrought about this canvas tie, doing backflips and falling down to roll around with it. Then it was so good he had to run away and talk about it, coming right back to start all over again.

Giuseppe, trying to understand Sunshine’s excitement came over to help him play with it, but didn’t stand a chance.
