Daily Sketch Reprise: Winter Cats, 2013

Cats are usually simply happy wherever they are because if they aren’t, they leave and find a place where they can be simply happy.

Looking at Mr. Sunshine’s graceful curve and watching the fluid motion of his bath I decided only watercolor would do. He and Jelly Bean were so cozy on the table by the window I knew they’d be there for a while and I could at least get a start, which I did, blocking them in as best I could. Even though Mr. Sunshine finished his bath and totally changed position I still finished the painting in one session. Bean was happily sleeping, sketching him is usually pretty easy.

Where to find this artwork

The original of this painting is still available, and you can also find it as a print on paper or canvas in the Feline Artwork and Daily Sketches galleries on Portraits of Animals.

What other sketches have I shared on or about the same date?

That would be Mr. Sunshine who hops into any bag that comes into the house and thoroughly inspects all corners and edges and any items inside. He had seen me pull various types of cat food out of the canvas shopping bag, and I think he was hoping it somehow magically sprouted up from the bottom of the bag and he would find more in there and have it all to himself.

He is sometimes joined by Bean, and the phrase “There’s not enough room in this bag for both of us” is immediately in evidence. There was too much activity too fast to sketch that.

Observation, 2014

Mr. Sunshine looked so handsome and graceful, balanced on the corner of the cabinet in the bathroom. He actually stayed there while I got my drawing materials and took a quick photo. I wanted the brush lines to describe his shape from whispy to heavy. Of course, he moved his face and that was a bit difficult at this angle, but I think this one may be worth a second look from the photo I took. I can see a few other things in it too.

At least, I think there were only three; it began with two in profile, Mewsette in front and Jelly Bean behind, then Mr. Sunshine joined them. At that point there were so many ears and whiskers that I couldn’t certify there weren’t more cats there, so that was what I portrayed in this sketch, just a tangle of ears and profiles.

Enjoying the brush markers again, at least until I get a few refills for my brush pen, which has real ink and a more varied line.

That’s what they get when they sleep on my desk, they get sketched. Mewsette doesn’t think she looks silly with her ear turned flattened because her head is upside down. She’s really not concerned with what anyone thinks, or that she’s sleeping right on something I needed to be working on.

I really love all of these, but those blue cats from 2013 are absolutely stunning.

Janet, you and I have the same eye for watercolors. “Winter Cats” is one of my favorite simple watercolors. I don’t know how I did it. I keep looking for ways to use it on greeting cards and as prints so that I can share it more, but I just like to look at it too.
