This bright morning sunlight gets us all up and around and doing interesting things. It may look as if Giuseppe is planning something. really he’s just basking in that wonderful sun puddle that’s always decorated exactly that spot since I’ve lived here. I stopped and looked at the deep shadows, the brilliant highlights and the reflected highlights in between and there was my daily sketch. Couldn’t sketch him right then, but took a quick photo, just before he stood up and stretched and walked toward me.

The toned paper is wonderful for black cats, especially in the sun. Click here to see more sketches on toned paper. One of these days, I’m going to have to do something with that collection.

(Technically, this is my sketch for January 4, 2016, but I couldn’t get it scanned and posted on that day.)

I caught a sweet moment between Mimi and Mewsette trading little face washes in the sun by the door this morning. I quickly sketched them in brown pastel pencil, handy, but when I was about to scan it I decided I didn’t have enough definition for even me so I added a bit more color and black.

If you remember playing jump rope, and you would watch the rope swinging round and round, moving your head and hands up and down and making little false leaps until you felt you had the rhythm and could jump in without getting smacked with quickly-swinging rope, then that might describe me swinging my gaze and pen up and down over my paper, almost touching the pen to it but stopping at the last moment as I followed Mewsette’s vigorous bath, not a special bath, just an everyday 4:00 p.m. bath, a little clean-up before tea. I finally did touch the pen to the paper, and then it was a race to the finish before she started on her other shoulder.

This sketch is in that brush-tip marker again, but instead of sketching sleeping cats with it—way too easy, ha!—I thought I’d try to capture that graceful curve of a cat having a bath which I love so much; you’ve seen it here before in sketches and a sculpture based on a very old sketch. Guess I never get tired of certain themes, just as I never get tired of living with cats.

  • These are stunning in their simplicity! I was drawn in by the first one (“Waiting Around the Corner”), but they are all incredible.

    • Thanks, Mamma Kat–it’s so much fun for me to do these quick little candids.
