Daily Sketch Reprise: Three Cats, 2014

The boys were hanging out in the kitchen, settling into some interesting arrangements. Any one of them would have made a fine line sketch, but I was picturing them as all in one line, as in a line on the paper, starting at the tip of one tail to the end of one chin, perhaps. It’s kind of a game, and a test of skill at drawing and hand-eye coordination that you draw one line without picking up your pen and without crossing the line that is there or retracing it. So in that case I was waiting for one arrangement where they would hold still long enough and were connected enough that I could do the line.

Well, I had to retrace, in fact a number of places so I didn’t try to bend that rule I just broke it. And I did pick up my pen because I stopped to look and get my bearings, and leaving the pen on the paper would have made a big blot of ink, possibly through several sheets. So, that rule was broken too. And I did sketch Giuseppe in the front and pick up my pen, then start back at the same spot and draw Mr. Sunshine to the top and left of him. But then I realized I’d stopped Mr. sunshine down near his bottom and there was no way to get to Bean. For once they weren’t moving and I did like it with the two of them, then I just decided to break all the rules and I started Bean up where his back meets Mr. Sunshine’s forehead and finished it off. Then added whiskers. What the heck. It’s my sketch.

Typically I use my ink technical drawing pen which rolls across the paper so easily, but for this time I chose a felt-tip pen because I wanted a slightly heavier line with more variation, and knew the felt tip would drag a little on the paper. The sketch also turned out a little smaller than usual, but I was kind of expecting that.

. . . . . . .

What else was I sketching on this date?

Jelly Bean continues his antics, balancing on the stool with Mr. Sunshine, who takes posing for his sketch very seriously.

I did have to do them in stages, though, and drew the stool later.
