Yesterday, when Mimi gave me the hairy eyeball about drawing her on black paper, I instead used the black paper to draw her children, and this is the sketch. They spent the whole morning tucked together on this one spot on the kitchen floor. What was so special about that spot? It’s right above the furnace. Smart kitties, warm kitties!

Rather than draw the cats on the paper, I decided to draw the floor around the cats, leaving their shapes. An interesting challenge. Pastel is a little dusty and I smeared it here and there, decided not to clean it up with an eraser. The slight ghosting makes it look like an x-ray.

. . . . . . .

What else was I sketching on this date?

Mr. Sunshine and Mewsette bathe (on my worktable) back to back in some fairly interesting positions. You know how kitty baths evolve, quickly moving across an area to be washed, then to another. I drew each of them in sections, but without really looking at my paper—to look away would have missed too much. The varying width of the brush marker adds interest, though, where I could not stop and rework an area. Id’ been watching them for quite a while as I worked, and by the time the sketch came around I had lines and shapes pretty well visualized.
