Daily Sketch Reprise: Sleepy Stepmonster, 2013

Giuseppe fell asleep on the steps, in such a deep sleep that he barely made a twitch the entire time I sketched him. I like his clear black shape, the simplicity of the steps with wooden treads and white risers, and the shadows.

I think this sketch will go places, along with the other “simple” sketches with a black cat and two or three other colors, like the kitchen series. I really must get myself some juicier markers, though, especially the gray. The patterns in the shaded areas are distracting, and I had wanted a smoother finish; I found myself wishing for my watercolors, but going to get them would have awakened Giuseppe and I would have had no sketch.

I thought, for once, I would trim off the rough edges to see what it would look like without that distraction. Here is that version.

What other sketches did I share on or around this date?

Not Blue Stripes, 2014

Apparently Mr. Sunshine doesn’t care for the dishtowel with blue stripes. He scrunched it up and kneaded it as best he could, and it still isn’t right. Probably the red gingham towels would work better for his purposes. That’s the only explanation I can determine for his slant-eyed expression. “Inscrutable” is Mr. Sunshine’s middle name. Is that “Mr. Inscrutable Sunshine”? Or “Mr. Sunshine Inscrutable Kazmarski”? He’s not telling.

They Always Find Each Other, 2012
charcoal sketch of four black cats sleeping
“They Fit So Well Together”, charcoal pencil and red conté, 6″ x 8.5″ © B.E. Kazmarski

It started out with Bean and Giuseppe, then Sunshine joined and hours later Mewsette joined the afternoon slumber party, as it always seems to happen. No matter where they are in the course of a day, they all end up together, tangled and content. How many photos ans sketches of them have you seen over the years? Some things never change. It’s very comforting.

And they fit so well together.

I drew this in charcoal pencil, then after a little break added the red conté outline because it was confusing even to me. And while they really look like a barely distinguishable blob of black when they do this, I thought it might be nicer for others to see a little more definition.

    • Thanks, Animalcouriers! I forgot to mention that there is a furnace vent in the bottom step, so these steps tend to be nice and cozy warm when the furnace is running, probably the reason for the nap–aside from the fact that it’s in my way too.
