I turned around from my drafting table and there as Mewsette, quietly sitting in the corner behind the door where it had grown quite dark. All I could see of her was a highlight here and there made by my worklight and, of course, her eyes. The furnace was running and she was quietly enjoying the warm air. I knew she’d sit fairly still for long enough to get the basic outlines of her in white charcoal on black paper, and I’d do her eyes just as I saw them. Of course I had to finish from a photo, but I got the basics in place before she started a bath and curled to nap.

What was I sketching last year on this day?

This wasn’t what I started out to do, but it’s what came of studying Giuseppe sitting in silhouette at the top of the stairs, just taking in the day. I’m not sure why I filled his shape in with black when I had intended another color entirely, I just found myself filling him in and realized what I was doing. I would guess I was more intent than I thought on the silhouette shape than the outline of his shape. Interesting when that happens. Last year (below) I could blame the change in idea on Mr. Sunshine.

I was planning on a nice, quiet, peaceful classic charcoal sketch of Mr. Sunshine as a loaf, dozing with nice deep shadows and gentle highlights at the end of the day, ears in nice positions listening to the evening birds outside the window, eyes slowly blinking. Really looking forward to it I even had my sketchbook ready and all the charcoal pencils and sticks I needed all set up. I picked up my pencil to do a light outline…

…and he jumped up and thrust his leg in the air and began licking himself. Now he’s curled and quietly sleeping, looking like a peaceful little angel. But mom gets her revenge. So he gets one of these sketches today.
