Daily Sketch Reprise: Quiet Morning or “Sunfall”
When I created this little sketch I called it “Sunfall”, yet when I first posted it I called it “Quiet Morning”. I like both titles, but I think I’m going to go with “Sunfall” from now on! Looks like it might be a nice card too!
The weather has cooled a bit and Mr. Sunshine and Jelly Bean sat quietly on the landing in the late morning as the sun came in the window and fell on them, as you see. The landing is so small and the ceilings are high, the window is a tall narrow casement and the sun comes in at an angle to cast on the round antique mirror making the light very interesting. Because of the trees outside and the objects inside the light on the landing takes on an interesting yellow-green cast with tints from the pine wardrobe, transitioning to bluish shadows near the floor. Of course, the felines are in silhouette in light like that.
I’m still working out a style I’d visualized in the spring of non-representation background with simple cat figures or silhouettes. Here is also “Peaceful Nap”, “The Daily Chase”, and in watercolor, “Cuddling on a Colored Ground“.

What else was I sketching on this date?
.
Bathtime, 2013
Mewsette and Mr. Sunshine have their baths after dinner, on the floor in the kitchen. Watching a cat bathe, you know they are in constant motion, and I’m always experimenting with new ways to express that motion. I’ve been feeling these little swirlies and squigglies in some of these charcoal sketches, and for now that’s working for me.

Three Cat Shapes, 2012
Three looking out the basement door, such nice colors for a summer morning. Can you guess which is who by their colors?
Well, it’s Giuseppe Verdi, Jelly Bean, and Mewsette.
I’m glad to report that the scanner on the printer upstairs has passed the test for quality and accuracy, especially as compared with the one downstairs. Unfortunately, the printer needs an IV for the ink, scary how much it can use! But I’m pleased with how accurately it captured these colors. And that’s even a new green marker.

Where do these visual inspirations come from? Giuseppe, Mr. Sunshine and Mewsette were enjoying the view as I rode my exercise bicycle, having plenty of time to watch them and the light and visualize this composition. I wanted lots of mixed colors, but muted, indefinite edges, but the sketch in black on top of all the pastel. The light comes in the door and fills the space among them, then fades to shadows behind. I had sketchbook and basic pastels to block in the shapes and areas, then finished it later from a photo. Mostly, I had a really strong visual that stayed with me as I played fingerpaints with my pastels on the paper. Read more and purchase.

Thanks Janet and kitties! I’m so glad you could understand what I meant too. Sometimes my ideas aren’t easy to describe. Yes, working on a card!
