Daily Sketch Reprise: A Pile of Socks, 2013

“Oh, thank you,” said Mr. Sunshine as he happily squinted and stepped into the pile of socks I was sorting and folding. “This is just…so nice…purrrrfect,” he said as he began purring loudly and kneading slowly and thoughtfully with both front paws.

Cats and laundry just go together as if the laundry basket had a little bell on it that only cats could hear. Finishing with the socks was out of the question right then, so I sketched him, from my angle, foreshortened, looking down on his happy face, relaxed ears, closed eyes and starfish paws.

Charcoal pencil is good for a quick study. I was going to add some color to the socks with pastel to distinguish them, but I left them as they were. I like the lines.

Where to find this artwork

This sketch looks awesome as a canvas print and sweet as a notecard, and the original is still available. You can find it on Portraits of Animals in Feline Artwork, My Cats and Daily Sketches.

This sketch is included in my Feline Style Sampler—read more about the book below.

What was I sketching last year?

On the Flowered Rug

These two settled on the landing for a good bit of the afternoon and I decided to take a moment to sketch them on the flowered rug, in whatever positions they were in at the moment.

I was happy enough with the sketch, but when I scanned it the lighter pink, kind of a bright highlighter pink, did not scan at all. Nothing, no color in that area. I put down another layer hoping that would darken it enough. Pale pink. I actually laid yellow down over it, and finally it scanned as…yellow-orange. In PhotoShop I changed the tone, hue and saturation of the yellow and came up with this pink, which is actually closer to the real pink than the bright highlighter pink was, but now all the other colors are different. Except the black. But anyway, it’s the two figures I like.

Originals and Prints of Daily Sketches on Portraits of Animals!

charcoal sketch of cat sleeping
“A Vigilant Nap”, black and white charcoal pencils on gray toned paper, 4.5″ x 7″ © Bernadette E. Kazmarski

Yes, Giuseppe is napping, but it’s not a serious nap, it’s a vigilant nap. He’s on my worktable under the lights while I am at my drafting table and computer in my studio, and apparently he’s been assigned to keep an eye on me. They take turns at this, and it’s clearly a different nap from a curled-in-a-ball, or a cuddle with siblings because the attention must be on what is happening, and one must be able to awaken immediately.
