Daily Sketch Reprise: Nap on the Box

Mewsette and Mimi were looking quite sweet on the box this morning, while the box is losing its loft as the to is caving in from the weight of so many cats. I thought I’d give them a nice cool blue background in hopes it would keep them feeling cool through the day. Nobody moved much today, including me.

A little minimalist sketch, seeing Bean and Giuseppe side by side on the stool looking out the door, their outlines echoed one to the other. I just wanted to catch the parts that described what I saw—the two repeated outlines, the ears heads, shoulders, back, not identical but similar enough, and just enough to show they are cats.

Looks simple but it’s not. Being honest, I had one try before I did this one, but it was too detailed from the beginning. I just wanted one, simple, descriptive line. The trick is to capture the line on the first try and that takes an immense amount of focus, and a deep, trusting relationship between your eyes and your drawing hand.

“Minimalism” really is an art form with the intent to use the least amount of information to describe the essence of its subject. I’d worked in this style years ago but I’ve gotten away from it in all I’ve learned since then. It’s nice to get back to it. You will probably see more.

Other Possibilities

So when these simple line art sketches come around again I like to play around with them. That’s how other products were born like “Inscrutable Patterns” and “Just Fits”. First, here’s what it looks like in reverse.

And in color, as a pattern.

Lots of fun!

Giuseppe must surely be absorbing some of the colors of the pens in my pen cup. I certainly thought the colors were inspiring next to Giuseppe’s black fur! Because he was sleeping I had the time to get more detail on his face than usual. Find it on Portraits of Animals.
