Daily Sketch Reprise: Mewsette on the Afghan, 2014

“Mewsette on the Afghan”, cropped.

Even though I originally did this sketch on February 7, 2014, I used it for last year’s desktop calendar and I love sharing it again this year. I looks just right for the holiday season. I can tell by last year’s calendar post that I knew months in advance I wanted to use this for November or December, and it won for December.

Below is what I said about the sketch when I first posted it.

. . . . . . .

Mewsette nearly blends in with the afghan.

I’ll admit, this took a little longer than the usual 15 minutes maximum. I’ve been holding off the sketches with this afghan just because I knew they’d be time-consuming for part of the charm is the detail of all the colors. Today I could not pass up pretty Mewsette quietly napping on the afghan, especially when she opened her big yellow eyes. I drew the basic sketch in black, then later filled in the colors with every marker I have in the house. This afghan is more muted than this sketch shows, but I like the bright colors too.

I love that old afghan. My mother crocheted it years ago from a 1944 pattern book out of scraps of wool yarn. Each granny square is made of four rows, each a different color, with one last row of black; when the squares are sewn together there are two rows of black between each color set which gives it this stained-glass effect.

. . . . . . .

Above I’ve posted the cropped version, but below is what the actual original sketch looked like. I think I like it this way too.

Must be something ab0ut that Sunday laundry that goes so well with cats…

Jelly Bean settled himself on the folded pillow shams and I can’t resist sketching ruffles and patterns. The empty spot on the left had contained his brother, Mr. Sunshine, but he left before I had a chance to sketch him, so it’s just the laundry basket behind him to the right. I added some watercolor washes just for fun.

Mimi sits on the top step of the deck looking out over the yard striped with sun. We’re still not sure what else she might decide to do out there, but for now she stays on the deck. Interesting, considering my yard was her territory when she was an outdoor cat. But then, sometimes it’s just nice to enjoy a lovely morning, especially in December.

For the first time I’ve done a daily sketch outside. I may get used to this. Just a quick sketch in charcoal.
