Daily Sketch Reprise: Just Try to Make This Bed, 2013
Instead I sketched him.
The window over my bed faces northwest and only gets angled direct sunlight in the late afternoon. All through the day the light is diffused through the trees outside with just a bit of reflected skylight cast down onto the bed, but the light has a lot of colors in it. Giuseppe is backlit and the darkest thing in the scene, and his contrast with the pale sheets was just remarkable, and very sketchable. It’s one of those times when their very blackness is the subject.
Trying out my soft pastel on Canson Mi-tientes pastel paper. A little dustier than all the others, not as much tooth, but otherwise good to work on.
I couldn’t make the bed until after dark and naptimes were over.

The maple outside the window that casts green tones on my bed all summer now casts shades of yellow as the leaves begin to turn on a sunny autumn afternoon; the bedspread is actually solid white. Some other cats had their way with the covers, leaving a rumpled mess that added character to the simple scene. Read more and purchase.
