Daily Sketch Reprise: Happy Birthday, Andy Warhol

The Fantastic Four, inspired by Warhol, especially since I spent some time today looking at his artwork. After all, I do live in his home town, we have a museum, and images are everywhere.

I don’t usually do a sketch with any intent on style or medium, in part because I never really know what specific materials will be at hand when the vision strikes me. I walk in the kitchen and there they are, and what do I have handy—the magic marker I use to label things for the freezer?

But my bag of sketch things isn’t too far away when I head to the kitchen, and I usually take a reference photo when I begin in case the phone rings or a big truck goes past and everyone scatters.

But this particular style was born from the reason I realized at their age of 16 months that they would make good art subjects—that very uniformity of color and shape is what inspires the colors and the exaggerated shapes. The first sketch I’d done someone said they looked like Warhol cats. I checked the greeting cards I had in my feline object collection, and indeed, I could see it!

So here we are, all colorful.
