Daily Sketch Reprise: Giuseppe Resting, 2014

So Giuseppe rests all the time, why draw him now? Just because he looked so velvety black there on my desk, completely covering up something I needed to work on. You can see a few extra lines I’d erased at the bottom; he had started out with one paw curled under and his head up. I no sooner had that roughly outlined than he laid his head on his paw.

My desk lights are shining on him from behind so his face is in shadow, and I did my best to capture the subtleties of highlights and reflections on his features in several different hardnesses of regular charcoal plus white charcoal on tan toned paper, then I used the kneaded eraser to burnish the densest black areas.

And when I scanned it, putting the entire sketchbook in the scanner, I liked the way that looked too. I don’t think of just seeing the sketches as you do because I actually see them in my sketchbooks. So this is what it looks like.
