Daily Sketch Reprise: First One Side, Then the Other, 2014

This is two studies of Mewsette washing her face, specifically when she runs her paw all the way over her ear. I love watching cats wash their faces, and watching them with their varied swiping strokes and drawing them from life takes a lot of watching, and a lot of deciding which view I’d like to sketch. Sometimes they swipe their paw over only their nose, sometimes across their whiskers or forehead, and sometimes they dip their head way down and wash behind their ears. This was the view I decided I liked best.

I sketched the top right view first, where she has her ear flipped back with her arm to wash the inside, then she moved to the other side so I decided, now that I had actually mastered how far she was leaning forward, what her back was doing, and especially what her arm was doing, I’d also do the other side. In that case I liked the view where she had her ear pushed down against her head.

That’s harder than it looks! But it turned out okay.

After all this color, a black and white sketch. I had something else planned in addition to these simple lines but Sunshine and Giuseppe ended up moving even before I was completely done, and my plan, adding a pattern in ink outlines around them from the throw they laid on, then adding colors in watercolor, just didn’t work without them there. It’s one I’m going to get to though—I laid this throw on the rocker with this intention. In the meantime, I still like just expressive lines from the brush pen.

Below, they were napping last year on this date too!

What else was I sketching on this date?

Giuseppe and Mr. Sunshine settle on the cabinet in the kitchen, a croissant and a loaf. I wasn’t inside very much today, but they obliged me with a few minutes of settling into their naps, and as long as I was patient and could wait about ten minutes they’d finally hold still for a while. Mr. Sunshine always looks blissfully content when he’s napping, no matter where it is.

“Oh, thank you,” said Mr. Sunshine as he happily squinted and stepped into the pile of socks I was sorting and folding. “This is just…so nice…purrrrfect,” he said as he began purring loudly and kneading slowly and thoughtfully with both front paws.
