Daily Sketch Reprise: The Dishtowel Drawer, 2013

When three great minds get together to accomplish something, it should be somehow recorded, even if they had no idea what they wanted to accomplish. Mr. Sunshine steps on one edge of the drawer while Giuseppe keeps an eye on Bean, who is trying to get into it from the floor.

I admit I kind of set them up for this but it was their idea first. I had opened the drawer for a dishtowel and there was a sudden interest in its contents and a desire to explore. I immediately visualized a sketch in markers, closed the drawer, got my art supplies and lured them all back, sketching them one by one when each reached a position I liked.

I like to challenge myself with odd angles and interesting perspectives so that I need to really study my subjects. After all, I see them all the time so it would be easy to make assumptions that I “know” what I’m drawing when what is there is actually quite different from what I’m thinking I see.

One of these days I’ll remember to get a juicy new black brush marker, but for now I like the sketchy unfinished look. Still, I also like the look of the strong lines and colors in “On the Chair”, which is what I had in mind when I visualized them. We’ll see what I do.

black cat on colorful afghan
“Mewsette on the Afghan”, cropped.

I could not pass up pretty Mewsette quietly napping on the afghan, especially when she opened her big yellow eyes. I drew the basic sketch in black, then later filled in the colors with every marker I have in the house. I love that old afghan. My mother crocheted it years ago from a 1944 pattern book out of scraps of wool yarn. Read more and purchase.
