Daily Sketch Reprise: After Dinner

Must have been a really good dinner for the three of them to doze on the cabinet. Giuseppe is kind of awake, but Mr. Sunshine has his chin tucked into his chest and Mewsette is on the edge of sliding down into a semi-bagel sleep. I usually work on the computer in the kitchen after we’ve eaten and I’ve cleaned up, but not tonight.

What else was I sketching on this date?

Mr. Sunshine, Giuseppe and Mewsette were piled in their new bed by the window all afternoon in a variety of comfortable poses just as they did when they were kittens. Yes, it was just as hard to tell them apart when I was drawing them as they appear here!

This is drawn in pastel pencil, the three colors I seem to like best for them—black, teal and red earth. Of course we know they are black and the shadows really are a dense black, but they each have a varying amount of mahogany in their fur, especially in natural daylight, and at this window their highlights look bluish. Someday I’ll have to gather together all the sketches I’ve done in this color combination.

Not what I set out to do when I grabbed the purple colored pencil to sketch Mimi bathing by the window, but as soon as I got the quick initial outline down, she decided she had been sketched enough lately. But I was involved enough in the sketch that I decided to continue.

Without my model my visualization wandered from the details I’d gathered and knew by heart and I just remembered that graceful curve ending in the curl of her tail. You can see a few other tries and other lines around the edges, so to clarify I hardened the lines I wanted then added some interior shading. Reminds me of a good old doodle. But I like the sculptural feel, and the will to abstract a familiar shape. And Mimi is definitely a purple kitty.

As soon as I was done she came right back. Taught me a lesson about using my imagination!
