Daily Sketch Reprise: Cat With Fruit

This is what is known as a “paintbomb”, kind of like a “photobomb”. Mimi did this to me last week but I did not paint her. When Jelly Bean decided to join the still life I was sketching, I decided to stop the other painting and sketch Bean. I was using oil pastels, so oil pastels it was. The paper was a little small for all the detail that’s in it, but that makes me keep it pretty simple, and all the tiny details I’d been visualizing just didn’t work. Too bad for me. Lots of color in an overcast winter day, and lots of color in a black cat, and that’s what counts.

I’m so pleased this little sketch is popular! I liked it as soon as I finished it, and I’ve reproduced it as a digital print, giclee, canvas and mousepad, and am about to try a few other things. Read more below.

What else was I sketching on this date?

Winter Morning, 2013

Mimi looks out this window nearly every day so I should have plenty of chances to sketch her, but I rarely have my art materials or my ability to focus first thing. I decided today was the day, though it was bright overcast, without the clear hard shadows of a brilliant winter morning. Still, the softened shadows were filled with dusky colors while even Mimi’s mahogany was nearly red.

This is just a bit of a thing in soft pastels on pastel paper in the little 5″x 7″ pads I keep at a couple of desks–and keep forgetting I have on hand. I used a buff underneath this, to make sure I kept it warm. It reminds me a bit of another sketch from earlier this year, “The Sunny Upstairs Window”, and here, framed.

I don’t think Mimi likes it, though; she keeps walking back and forth in front of my monitor, and I get the idea she’s hoping I don’t post it.

I like to show the edges of a sketch like this, but they take on a slightly different character when they’ve been cropped to the essential image, as below.

Sleeping and Bathing, 2012

Mewsette and Jelly Bean demonstrate two of the most important activities in a cat’s life.

Right now, Mewsette is watching me compose this post. I wonder what she’s thinking.

I’m thinking that I can’t see fully half of my monitor.

But one of the things I’ve always liked about painting animals is that they never tell me what I’ve painted doesn’t look like them. I don’t take this to mean they like it, though.

I tried a few new/old charcoal techniques here, mainly using a kneaded eraser to remove most of the charcoal in an area—removing all of it is never possible—then sketching on top of that area to add an extra level of dimension. Mewsette’s back, side and forehead were done this way. In addition, I used the kneaded eraser create highlighted fur by shaping the eraser in a thin shape and sketching with it.
