Daily Sketch: Emeraude
Yes, it’s Emeraude’s debut as a daily sketch! She loves to sit on the windowsill, but today it was something special, gentle dapples, lots of green, and that lovely curve of her head and her back and her tail. She has the same mahogany tones in her fur as Mimi and her children, except that her fur is a bit shaggy, not really long, but it’s growing in nicely.
I had to take some time to get to know her, and get a feel for what she represents, and I had to wait until she was ready. She’s been in my studio and on the windowsill, but even though she’s been feeling quite well she was not ready to model. Today, I actually saw her as I was in the shower…I have a clear shower curtain so I don’t miss a moment of the action in that green and white room, but I looked at her graceful shape, the burnished highlights, the shadows on the windowsill and the green and sky outside and knew this was the one. I reached out with one hand to get my camera, which is waterproof, and snapped a few photos. A short while later, I did most of the basic sketch until Emeraude left the windowsill for pets, and finished the last details later from the photos. Sometimes this is how art happens—I couldn’t wait, the light would change too much!
I can’t play with her shape as I can with Mimi and the Four, at least for now, but I think she’s a girl who likes to be what she is. We shall see.
This is drawn in Sennelier soft pastels on Wallis sanded pastel paper.
