Daily Sketch: A Tiny Moth

We’ve had an outbreak of tiny little moths in the house that flutter and don’t seem to get anywhere, they hover in the air and would seem easy to catch, but they are frustratingly elusive. This has proved to be an important catification exercise in stalking, leaping pouncing, and running up and down the steps. This particular tiny moth was actually on the wall in the tub, and was out of reach of even Giuseppe as he stretched his full length, standing on his toes.

Sometimes I see them staring intently at apparently nothing that is apparently in mid-air. It generally turns out to be one of these little moths. I have been known to give a moth a little nudge so it leaves its perch and gets the felines all a-flutter all over again. I think they are grain moths of some sort and seem to have come from a sack of bird seed.

Mr. Sunshine is ready to go in for the kill of the wine cork but Giuseppe has been watching around the corner and the plot may come to a quick change. I’m so glad they finally did something interesting today. Of course, I was not terribly interesting myself, if you ask my feline roommates, it was such a gloomy Monday.

Oh, Bernadette – that’s a great sketch, but beware – the moth you’ve described sounds exactly like one of the clothes moths I’ve been battling and they’re very destructive in their larval stage. I’ve lost a couple of nice wool sweaters and had a wool jacket of my husband’s end up so shredded that I had to vacuum pieces of it out of the closet – it’s horrible! I just had to tell you because I’m still trying to get rid of the moths and haven’t succeeded yet…….
I do really enjoy your photos and artwork and wonderful entertaining accounts of the lives of all those lovely cats! – Kay

Kay, that’s what they looked like to me too! I’ve had a few here but not recently, though they destroyed a vintage wool jacket I adored. A few years ago a bunch of similar moths came out of a big bag of squirrel corn I’d gotten and got into everything in my kitchen–and I bake a lot, it was a mess! I thought they were back, but I also found I’d unintentionally moved an old crocheted bag I use as a cat bed to the kitchen, and that may be what they are following. thanks for the warning–I’ll lock up my coats! Thanks for the compliments too.
