Daily Sketch Reprise: Pinwheels, A Nap on the Quilt, 2014

Mewsette and Bean were completely relaxed on the purple and white pinwheel quilt in my bedroom for the afternoon. Lucky them. I liked their silhouettes, but I also liked it when Bean turned and looked at me.

I initially visualized this in colored pencil, but then tended toward watercolor pencil so I could blend in some of the lines and even add a bit of basic shading to the cats and the quilt patches, but in the end I didn’t want to complicate the subject.

Looks like napping was one of the primary activities on this date in history.

Well, what else do you call it?

This is one of my “traps”, set so that I can get work done in one area while cats are safely and quietly sleeping in another. They are on my work table and conveniently if I need to use it, I can pick up the box and move it to my chair or drafting table. Often they don’t even wake up.

Mimi and Bean had a wonderful afternoon nap.

They really have been teaming up on this stool by the front door; this evening it was Mr. Sunshine and Mewsette again, but the sun came past them at a low angle filling the area with warm yellow light. Out came the markers, the quickest way to capture them.

I do enjoy sketching them while they sleep because I can catch more details and try out other techniques more easily, but it’s much more instructive for me to catch them while they are involved in some activity. Making those quick decisions about line and shape and color really perk up the aesthetic senses.
