Daily Sketch: 320 Cat

So I did decide to sketch my favorite photo from “320 Cat”. The kitty, Gossamer, kind of makes me think of Emeraude. I also like the gentle colors—the day was overcast and I did brighten the photo a bit, but the palette is why it lends itself to an ink drawing with watercolor. Someday I may spend a little more time and do a more complete watercolor, but for now I’m happy with this.

Unfortunately, my pen bled when I watercolored over the lines, and that’s not happened before. I purchased a new pen to replace the one I’d used to draw all the other ink-and-watercolor sketches you see here, I let it dry after I’d sketched, and still the ink picked up and bled in with my watercolors. Not cool. I’d looked for years for a pen I enjoyed working with that I could use with water-based media like watercolors and markers.

But Mr. Sunshine decided to try his paw at art today, and that made everything more interesting. None of the paintbrushes tasted at all good and the paint water tasted the same as always. It was more fun to recline gracefully on the piece of watercolor paper, kind of like a combination of conceptual and performance art. He would not be photographed, though.

What was I sketching a year ago today?

  • Maybe the ink running made it a bit more Monet, but being a total amateur when it comes to art, I wouldn’t notice if you hadn’t said! The splash of red keeps drawing my eye as does the kitty. I love that pose!

    • Thank you, Austin! If I’d gone farther it would have been completely murky, a real disappointment. I had wanted a few other bright colors as well in the flowers but had to stop. Still, I’m pleased, he was such a nice old guy.
