Daily Sketch: What the Cats Were Doing

I was all alone in my studio. This was not so bad, since kitties like to play with my things, so I worked and worked without the worry of kitties swatting expensive pastels or pens, or walking across my artwork or swatting at my hands as I worked or stealing my tools.

But I was lonely, and…suspicious. Before too long, curiosity got the better of me and I went to look in my bedroom where I knew there would be cats. All five, totally sacked on the bed. Well, they wouldn’t be going anywhere for a while I could tell. Might as well take a break for a sketch. It’s Jelly Bean, Mewsette, Giuseppe in front, then Mr. Sunshine and Mimi in the back.

Later, I checked again and found an indistinguishable gob of black cats, below, and Mimi came to greet me, spending the rest of the afternoon on my lap, and acting as my paint rag.

I love it when the Four sleep in a pile as they did when they were kittens. Above was what I really saw. Here’s a lighter version so you can distinguish the individuals—though sometimes when they are like this I’m not sure they are truly individuals.

What was I sketching a year ago today?

Jelly Bean and Mr. Sunshine decided to hang out on top of the wardrobe…see the original post and read more about the sketch.

  • Aw, so adorable. Love seeing them all lying in a “gob” like that 🙂 Must admit that I too, would have been suspicious if all my cats were missing. Usually never a good sign 🙂

    • Susan, I thought there might have been a daytime mousie! Not so, just lazy kitties, staying close to me.

    • Carolyn, when it refers to black cats it’s the best collective! And I’m drawing from a historical industrial reference–in reference to coal mining, you’ve heard of a “gob pile”? Not sure if that’s an American term or if miners from the British Isles brought it with them, but it refers to the waste material brought up with coal–mostly rocks of other nature with lots of flecks of coal in it. Where there was mining, you find these everywhere, just huge heaps of stuff that actually change the topography in some places. Many of the environmental projects I work on are remediation of former surface and deep mining operations and I’ve photographed, illustrated and written about these, but I find the term “gob piles” pretty humorous for some reason. Definitely describes a pile of black cats all sleeping soundly, even as flowers, grass and trees grow on them!
