Daily Photo: Watching the World

Watching the World in profile.
Watching the World in profile.

We all love my studio window, a big, old, battered metal-framed casement about 4′ x 4′ on the second floor looking out at the spruce, maple and river birch in the front of our house. I call it the “tree house” as we watch the weather and light change and spend time with all the tree-dwellers in the neighborhood above the street. Giuseppe was watching Mr. Cardinal singing his spring song on this particular afternoon and I watched the light and images reflect on his eye and admiring his profile. Purrhaps he was dreaming about a little aria he might sing for Mlle. Daisy Emerald Marguerite, his French Canadian love in the cold north country, and how she might like some nuzzles and purrs from her American opera star tonight. He may sing an aria to their six-year affaire, meeting when Giuseppe was three and she a scandalous 12 years old. But Giuseppe has not wandered from his Mlle. in all these years.

I also liked the view of his silhouette against the bright outdoors.

I’m trying to get more feline photos up on my website—certainly I have no lack of them, but that’s part of the problem, choosing them and taking the time to add them all. I have added a dozen and will endeavor to keep up with likely photos as they come around here on The Creative Cat.

Read about Mlle. Daisy Emerald and the long-distance affaire between the mature French-Canadian feline lady and the young American opera star.

They so enjoy writing florid Victorian-style letters to each other, sometimes the poets, sometimes the artists, sometimes the bonneted Mlle. Daisy Emerald and the beplumed Giuseppe Verdi in their Revolutionary roles.

Mimi tells me to “clean that ice off the steps or I’m staying right here!” She stayed right there. The steps are wooden and as cold as it was I would have to chip the steps to get the ice off. Today it is melted and no complaints.

"Clean off that ice!"
“Clean off that ice!”

But then I brought Clementines home from the store and separated them for studio and kitchen, and placed the box on the cabinet, knowing what would happen. Bella was the first customer, the others had to wait for their turn to sit in the Clementines box for a while. Bella looks very serene.

Chocolate Cake, 2015

Smokie is very sweet, when he wants to be
Smokie is very sweet, when he wants to be

A little pun on “cheesecake”. Well, Smokie is just a kitten. And that’s what I think when I look at the sun in Smokie’s fluffy feathers. Smokie’s gray early kitten fur has developed into a luxurious sable brown with mocha highlights, especially in the sun. Even in natural diffuse light you can see he is a soft brown. Along with those amber eyes he is one handsome kitten.

Divine Spark, 2013

More where this came from later today!

I so loved the photo, “Divine Spark”, which I posted for Wordless Wednesday, but there were 16 shots, all interesting and the choice was darned difficult! I decided to choose another to feature tonight, and decided instead to do a little animated GIF slideshow of them all.

And here is the thing I want others to think about in capturing a photograph, whether it’s your cats or your family or your garden or whatever: always have your camera ready, and also be aware of interesting scenes. In this case it was less than an hour after Morning Mousie Mayhem and the Four Housecats of the Apocalypse were still prowling around and acting up, even though the mousie was moved to the back yard and they had had breakfast. But the day was brightening, a hazy early morning turning sunny, and the cats were very animated so I carried my camera on purpose.

I was putting on my tights, sitting on the only seat in the bathroom and noticed Giuseppe’s shadow. I love shadow photography, whether it’s cats or flowers or tree branches, I love the silhouette of a familiar subject in various colors and degrees of opacity. So I quit with the tights and got my camera, snapping photos while Giuseppe looked around the room and out the window, as he does when he sits on the sink. When he sat still, I held that big DSLR in my right hand as steadily as possible and reached my left hand way over my head, reaching for him so he’d start to move around again, then I thought I’d pet him.

Then the sun went behind a big cloud and there was no shadow at all, and I took the opportunity to remove that annoying speck of white primer that’s been in the middle of that panel in the door for about three years and gets in the way of all the shadows cast on that door! Then the sun came out in full force and the soft shadows changed to clear and contrasty shadows.

This slideshow is an animated GIF so you can’t stop it or slow it down. Each of the images appears for two seconds then moves on; the last image sits for five seconds so you know it’s the end, then it starts over.

I have names for most of them, but they are all “Shadow Kitties”. I numbered them in the upper left, so if there’s one that’s your favorite let me know!

Bean Counter, 2014
black cat watching beans
Mr. Sunshine watches me count out beans into a measuring cup.

Mr. Sunshine takes his responsibility as a detailed supervisor very seriously, and here he helps me at bean-counting time. I tried to explain about income and outflow and profit and loss, but he was a little distracted by all those pretty little beans. Still, I’m sure he understood perfectly.

Below he gives me one of his killer head-tilts and tells me he’s not sure why people make such a big deal out of bean-counting and taxes because this was relatively easy. But then, all is right with the world when Mr. Sunshine looks at me like that.
