Daily Photo: Suddenly Very Silent

four black cats on bed
It was oddly silent…

Setting up for the day in my studio I realized, after listening to Smokie and Bella tear around the house after I’d opened the door to the bathroom, that it was quite silent again, and I was quite alone. Where could all the cats have gone already? They’d only been out a short while and I hadn’t even cleaned up for the morning yet. Curiosity, and a little bit of worry, got the better of me and I went to check, thinking perhaps they’d somehow gotten outside…? I go no farther than my bedroom doorway. Smokie and Bella have nice beds in their room but don’t get to sleep with me on the bed. They both look pretty pleased with their discovery, even if I’m not there. The boys are just having a plain old nap and wonder what the big deal is. Kittens don’t nap for too long. They were up and at it again shortly after.

Can I Make It Up There?, 2013

Mimi judges the distance from my work table to the top of the cabinet.

Mimi determines the distance and the amount of effort it would take to land safely on top of the stuff on top of the cabinet. I know from experience that she can do this. So does she. Her sons are unimpressed. I need to get work done, but I patiently wait for Mimi to make up her mind. It’s just the way cats are, whether they want to get on your chair or walk in front of you as you are carrying a pile of laundry, it’s all at their pace.

In the end, she decided to have a nap on my chair. Eventually Jelly Bean and Mr. Sunshine joined her. Nothing was knocked on the floor or broken.

Easy Like Sunday Laundry, 2012

Find the cats in the laundry.

If four large cats decide to settle on the laundry pile for an all-day nap (about noon to about 6:00 p.m. counts as an all-day nap), then I’m certainly not going to be the human to change their plans.

Too bad for me, I didn’t get to do the laundry.

But perhaps they weren’t sleeping the entire time. Hmmmm…what were these three great minds up to? Should I worry? Don’t think so. I heard a bunch of sneezing and went to see what it was all about, and it turns out they’d been tickling each others’ noses with their whiskers.

Mimi is exhausted from her shift with me in the studio.

It was a good day.

In a Basket, 2011

Mewsette in her basket.

Outside the tree branches wave and twirl in the roaring wind and the rain falls in hissing torrents, but Mewsette is asleep in her basket, curled with her nose on her tail, and I can feel her contentment from across the room.

Cookie in the Snow, 2011

Cookie greets a snowy morning.

Cookie has seen enough seasons come and go that she knows exactly what that white stuff is and what it means. Wet paws. Cold. Usually when we go out the door in the morning she heads right down the steps after a cursory inspection of the deck. But this morning if I hadn’t gone out to fill the feeder she would have been happy to stay put!

But she followed me through what had become slush in the short time since we’d gotten up and picked her way through the leaves and twigs under the tree behind me.

Cookie carefully makes her way through the slush.

She collected a few snowflakes, though these were melting already as we went in the door. After this she decided to warm herself on my lap using Mimi and Kelly as pillows.

  • There is nothing so exciting as finding Mom’s bed,
and realizing how comfy it is!
    Laundry works too 😉

    • Georgia and Julie, these two little formerly feral kitties were right there, as if they knew about it already! And of course laundry is meant for cats!
