Daily Photo: Showing Off

black cat on door
Jelly Bean shows off.

Seeing movement out of the corner of my eye I turned around to see…Bean standing on the top edge of the door! He loves to show off like this and walks around on the edge of the door as if it’s the floor.

Here, however, he’s looking into the reflection in the glass on the painting near him on the wall, and I sincerely hope he doesn’t think it’s a place he can step into, like Alice.

I had to help him down, though. I’ve never seen him on this door, and I couldn’t figure out how he got there because there is precious little to leap from anywhere near. But he had apparently jumped up from the tiniest little spot on a table on the other side of the doorway, and aiming to get back down was apparently too much of a challenge. I rolled my chair over to him, which is actually tall and used for a drafting table, but it’s black and he apparently couldn’t see it well enough. So I got up and lifted him off the edge of the door.

Then I moved things on the little table he’d jumped from and another near the door. Best just to be prepared for him next time! And I can’t…well, no I can wait to see what he gets into next!

  • Well, if Bean’s older brother Angus were discovered in that spot I would bet he’d used the clothing hanging on the door to aid in the leap. Gus does this regularly to climb into a cabinet that’s further off the floor than the top of a door. The amazing thing is that he never damages anything. On second thought, he may just be good at levitation…. Perhaps THAT runs in the family (along with cuteness).

    • Amby, in part, he did since a number of empty hangers ended up on the floor. And Bean sometimes joins Mewsette on the shelf just outside the door that’s a foot higher than the doorjamb–to get there they have to leap from the wardrobe on the landing. I don’t want him climbing things I plan to sell, so I’ll give him a lift! But it definitely runs in the family, just a little interesting that the two with more compact frames tend to be the leapers who like extreme heights while the two with longer bodies just like to stretch around but not leap. They’re all cute no matter how they’re shaped.

  • How do you *know* he can’t jump into the painting like Alice?

    Reply
    • Because Alice jumped into a mirror, and the kitten was white!
