Daily Photo: Shelter from the Rain

Mimi has taken shelter from the rain, sitting under my dresses hanging on the line. Apparently, she thinks she’s pretty smart, not like me, still out in the yard cleaning up one of my stone paths while my dresses get an extra gentle rainwater rinse. Well, some days are like that.

They are still keeping an eye on me. I realized as I worked at my computer at the desk downstairs, which I call “my office” as opposed to “my studio”, I realized that all eight cats had gathered around me. Mimi was pestering me to go outside, but just about everyone else was sleeping. I took photos with my phone and with my camera, and both are below since neither was entirely clear. And as I am packing things away from my recent show I am also reorganizing things and cleaning out files, so stuff is everywhere. I can’t wait until it’s done. Neither can my cats! They want their floor back.

Somewhere in this organized mess you will see the eight black cats who dozed off while supurrvising me. I’m moving up to the studio now, we’ll see how that works out.

These four can never be too close, like when they all crowd together on my desk facing the same direction. They stayed there all morning. I have no idea why, there are plenty of other places to sleep, but I guess they liked it best.

two black cats with box — Mewsette and Giuseppe find a way to share a box that is really too small for either one of them.

In terms of actual physics, the box can only hold most of Mewsette OR Giuseppe, but certainly not both. However a little bit of feline ingenuity solved the problem of sharing the box—each of them has some of the box, and they are perfectly happy with that.

I love my loving siblings and the many wonderful things they do each day. I think I’ll try to come back from the store with a bigger box next time, though. Here is what they looked like from above.

A Moment With Mewsette, 2012

Mewsette has been spending time with me in the mornings in the basement, and is a perfect subject, just being herself, and holding positions for whole seconds at a time.

After all the photos I’ve taken by this basement door, do I need to say I love the light that comes in at this angle, the shadows and patterns? Add a cat, and nothing could be better.

Every home needs a kitty who waits in the window for your return.

There is nothing more welcoming for me than a feline silhouette in one or more of my windows. Here, Mimi waits at the dining room window as I pull in front of the house with things to unload. Her greeting procedure once she has determined it’s me is to meow two quick “ee-eee” meows, stand up and stretch as tall as she can in the window, which is not terribly tall since she is tiny, and if the window is closed, slide her paws down the glass; if it’s open, she digs her claws into the screen—no, we don’t like this, but we live with it—stretch herself, then paw back down to the windowsill.

For half the 20 years I’ve been in this house I worked outside my home. The hours with that job were long and I rarely returned during daylight, but I had lamps on timers so that I wouldn’t come home to a dark house. I remember looking at my lit windows from as far down the street as I could see it, looking for my welcoming feline silhouettes—Sophie always at either the side window or my bedroom window upstairs in the front, Cookie in the front window downstairs, and Stanley and Kublai ranged around among the three downstairs windows. Even Sally, who was deaf, greeted me not just with a silhouette but with a meow I could hear outside even in winter when windows were closed. Any of the others of my feline family showed up at the windows as I walked up the side steps and came to the door, and all were at the door to greet me.

I can’t imagine it any other way.
